First of all i want to thank our Lord Jesus Christ for giving me this opportunity to travel to the northern most part of the Philippines (Batanes) and to thank Him for the protection, guidance and the for good weather on the time of my travel. Unlike all my other travels, this one's the best and really a dream come true, cause I've been planning to travel here almost couple of years and now it was a success.
Batanes is the northern most part of our country overlooking Formosa Taiwan. Batanes is compose of many islands but only 3 islands are inhabited namely: Sabtang, Itbayat and Batan Island, where Batan is the main island among the three and Itbayat is the northern most part. I spent my first day at Batan Island and visited the must-visit places in town of Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, Uyugan and Itbud.
On my first day I visited the following places: Basco Church, Basco Lighthouse, Rolling Hills, Mahatao View Deck, Town of Mahatao, Mahatao Church, Marlboro Country, Valugan Bay of Mahatao and back to Basco Lighthouse for the sunset. It took me whole day to visit all these place and didn't expect that riding a bike will took me whole day unlike if i rented a van it will just take half day and will still have time to rest in the afternoon but still worth the effort cause the view and nature is indescribable really indescribable. Never thought that there's such a beautiful province here in our country. Bike rental is ranging from P200-P500 depends on where will you rent, i rent my mountain bike at Shanedel's Inn and Cafe cause I also stayed there for only P300/room/night (Fan Room). They also have air-con room and family room ranging from P800-P1500/night/head. She is so kind and will attend all your needs all through out your stay in Batanes and also she can arranged your tour if you want to because she has contacts of tour in Batanes. She can also prepare your breakfast and dinner just inform her one day earlier so she can prepare a delicious meal for your group. You can also call her 2 or 3 weeks earlier for your reservation at Shandel's cause there's no assurance that there will be vacancy on the day of your arrival because Shandel's is always full and loaded with tourist. From Basco Airport you can reach Shanedel's Inn by walk or riding a tricycle. A lot of tricycle awaits at the airport because they are waiting for tourist for them to take to their Inns. Tricycle will cost you from P30-P50 to take you to your hotel. Here's Nanay Delly's (Shanedel's Inn and Cafe) contact number - +639204470737. More picture of Day 1 click

San Vicente Port

An early wakeup for 2nd day tour to catchup for the Falowa boat to Sabtang Island, the 2nd inhabited island of Batanes. Woke up at 4am in the morning, wash up and prepare things needed like water, snacks and of course don't forget your camera. From the Shandel's entrance you can wait there for a public jeepney to take you to Ivana San Vicente Port where the Falowa boat waits. Jeepey will cost you P25/head from Basco Town to Ivana, but if you want you can also ride tricycle to the port but more expensive than Jeepney for about P150-P180 from Basco. I was alone so i need to take the jeep rather than tricycle cause it will cost me too much but if your group is 2-3 pax, you can ride tricycle for private and comfort, but still riding jeepney is less expensive. From Ivana San Vicente port you will ride the Falowa boat for almost an hour to reach Sabtang island, boat fee is P50/head and make sure that you come early before the boat leaves cause schedule of falowa boat leaves at 6am or even earlier if the passengers are full it immediately leaves for Sabtang s make sure your group arrive early at the port. Along the travel to Sabtang, cover your things with plastics specially your gadgets cause it might get wet cause of big waves, you are traveling where South China Sea and Pacific Ocean meets so better cover your things with protections. Upon arriving the Sabtang island, you'll see a sari-sari store, you can buy snacks and juices there, just want to remind you Sabtang Island has no mineral water, there's no place there you can buy one so better bring mineral water along with you from Batan. Sari-sari's store owner is "Ate Beth", she' very nice and will also help you arrange you for freelancer tour guides if your not engaged with BCTA or private tour. She has contacts on single motor and tricycle motor in Sabtang. She gave me a contact where I can rent it for whole day, he called "Kuya Roelle" to tour me in Sabtang island. You can also request ate Beth to cook you for a lunch when you come back after your tour and she'll kindly prepare it for you for a cheaper cost compared to the package tour of P300 for the lunch, of course if you are a budget traveler you'll definitely choose to eat at ate beth's karinderya, i myself is a budget traveler so i chose to stay at ate beth's a lot cheaper ad practical foods to eat.
Started the tour when kuya Roelle arrived at ate beth's store, I told him my itinerary and the places I wanted to visit, he's kind and will definitely follow the things you wanted to visit. first we visit the Savidug town where all the houses are built with stones and corals, also my guide kuya Roelle lives there. he showed me the stone houses and also the Savidug Church/Chapel where they go during Sundays. After we headed to Chavayan town, the last town in the west, same in Savidug, their houses are also made up of stones and corals, so that when typhoon or storm come, it will protect them from it.
Along the highway between Savidug and Chavayan, you'll pass by the so called "Chamantad Tinyan-Sitio" Kuya Roelle told me a story that this is the place of their Sanctuary (Picture on left). After our stopped, we headed to Chavayan town and upon arriving all I see is houses and the road, no sign of people walking, truly a quiet and very peaceful province, their weekdays is like x2 Sundays of Manila.
Marcelo Hostallero (103 year old Ivatan)

Kuya Roelle and i started walking and visit the stone houses and he led me to the house of the oldest Ivatan in Batanes, He is Marcelo Hostallero (seated) who at 103 years old living man in Chavayan, Sabtang Island, Batanes. Her mother told me that he was a fisherman/cattleman during his younger years and that he is also a member of Physical Fitness Movement of San Francisco del Monte, Quezon City. Her grand daughter (wearing violet) told me that Lolo Marcelo haven't been hospitalized ever and never been visited hospitals which means lolo Marcelo is truly a healthy man, and in addition at his age right now, he's still helping in everyday work on the seaside with his family. Truly an amazing Ivatan. He should be set as an example for all of us, and no reason for us to complain about our work :) cause even a 103 y/o man is still working with no complaints. For me lolo Marcelo is a hero. After visiting lolo Marcelo, we walked around the town and take some photos of the Chavayan Chapel and also took a shot of myself wearing the so called "Vakul". As seen from the picture below, this Vakul is use by the Ivatan women to protect their head from the heat of the sun and from the rain. They also sell it for around P400-P500 each.
After Chavayan town, we directly headed to the famous Nakabuang White Beach. upon arriving, there you'll see the lunch package for a cost of P300/head. They serve big lobster and also the famous coconut crab that only serve in Batanes. One local told me that they catch coconut crab in a small island near Itbayat island, but only fisherman are allowed to go there because it is too dangerous for a tourist/visitors to go to that place. After taking some rest and some photo shots of Nakabuang White Beach, we headed back to Ate Beth's karinderya to take my lunch there, and upon arriving, Ate Beth prepared some kind of fish and eggplant for my lunch, and i spent only P125 for 4pcs of fish, 3pcs of eggplant, 2 rice and 1liter of Pepsi and thats a big solve compared to the P300 food package. Thanks very much Ate Beth. After lunch waited for the Falowa boat to arrive and get back to Batan island. After a few minutes the boat arrive and all other tourist called for boarding and went back to Batan.

Honesty Coffee Shop

After an hour of travel in the ocean. I pass by the Honesty Cafe Shop and like the people say, there is no one in the store, nobody is watching you, prices are posted on the items and its all between you and you and you if you are honest enough to leave your payment in the box, you can leave an exact amount or more cause there's no one to give you back the change. After that I headed directly to the famous Lola Florestida Estrella (House of Dakay) just nearby the honesty cafe, you can walk from their to the house of lola Ida. Upon arriving at her home, I greeted her and seated near her and she started talking and sharing stories about her life. Her house is built in lime and stone in 1887, locals says that it is the last house in 5 structures that survived the strong earthquake in September 13, 1918, and all other 4 were already struck down. Lola Ida told me that her house was built by her grandmother "Luisa Estrella" who left it to her favorite nephew Jose Dakay Estrella. And now the only living descendant there is Lola Florestida Estrella now at 84 year of age. She is the most famous and the most photographed personality in Batanes. She welcomes every visitors to her house and readily prepare to pose for the visitors to have a photo shoot with her. I myslef also took a picture with her and planned to have it print in the town and give it back to her the next day so that she'll have a copy of our picture. The reason why I did this is because on the first day of our conversation and sharings, she admitted that she rarely saw the photos that was taken of her, and I also heard from other locals that some of her photos have even won awards and some photographers even get paid for their photos of her, and the saddest part is.... she gets nothing.

With the famous Lola Florestida Estrella (smiling)
House of Dakay
Lola Ida never expected something in return from her kindness and being hospitable to have her house open to visitors and tourist and mostly to have her photo taken. I just hope that people, tourist and visitors will be sensitive about this, if by any chance tourist will visit her, please spend time with Lola Ida for chatting and sharing or even just listen to her stories, she'll definitely love it and it will really make her smile if you would just listen to her. When I visited her and stayed with her for a couple of hours, I encountered a lot of tourist just get into her house took a photo of her and leave, also other people just passed by outside of her house, took a photo of it and leave, not even going in and say a "Hi" to lola, hate to say it but those guys are insensitive and disrespectful. Just to remind those kind of people, Lola Ida is just the same of us "Human" that to be respected and not just an object to take a photo of it and leave.
She's not rich and has no income and she's really getting old. She'll be needing medicines and food and money. Even the simple things of bringing something to her as a memory can leave a trace of smile on her face. (On my last day and for the 3rd time I visited Lola Ida, I gave her the copy of our photo so that she can still remember me when I visit her again in the future, and I also brought her groceries like Alcohol, Fita biscuits in can, Bear Brand milk ready to drink and Chuckie chocolate drink and bread) I just hope that when I get back to Batanes, she could still remember me.

Fundacion de Pacito
And for my 3rd day, I first visited the most expensive hotel "Fundacion de Pacita". A really high-end hotel of all the inns in Basco Batanes. From here you can see a panoramic view of the island and also the Pacific and South China Sea. From the airport you can take a tricycle to take you here for around P30-P50. Rate of rooms at Fundacion range from P3000-P5000 per night. If you have less budget, you can go to Shanedel's Inn located at the town.
Valugan Boulder Beach
After Fundacion, me and my guide go directly down to Valugan Boulder Beach(picture above) just near the Fundacion. This is the beach where the big boulder rocks covered the sand, the locals says that this big stones came from the mouth of Mt. Iraya (photo behind). The local says that these rocks is more than hundred years of age. Of all the beaches that I've visited here in the Philippines, this one is the most unique where the sands is covered by this giant rocks, really amazing.
After Valugan Beach, I rode a jeepney from Basco to Uyugan for about 30 minutes ride, and when I've reach Uyugan town, I talked to a person and ask her where could I rent a bike, she said there is no one renting bike on their town, but she was so kind to lend me her bike, and after I directly go to the "ruins of Songsong" for about 30-45 bike ride.
